Isidore damages crops and houses

NUEVA GERONA, September 23 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Hurricane Isidore damaged 1,164 houses in the Isle of Youth, south of Havana; 174 of them were a total loss.

The local government announced an emergency rebuilding plan which will be kicked off with the distribution of 10,000 roof tiles.

The hurricane caused losses in agriculture, primarily to the banana and citrus crops. More than 17,000 tons of grapefruit were knocked over and authorities hope to process them as quickly as possible. About 300 acres of bananas and 1,500 acres of other produce were also affected.
