HAVANA, September (www.cubanet.org) - Interior Ministry officials fined
Jorge Olivera 200 pesos for spending the night at the home of his wife of five
years. This is the third time he is fined for the same reason since May 2000,
and this time, says Olivera, he wasnt even there.
The problem, says Olivera, is that his official residence, as listed in the
Identity Card office of the Ministry, is in Old Havana, whereas his wifes
registered residence is in the municipality of Centro Habana. Law 217 forbids "any
citizen who lives in one municipality of the capital to spend the night in
another."
In any case, Olivera says he told Ministry officials, he wasnt at his
wifes house this time. He said officer Máximo Cruz told him the
Ministry has full faith in the truth of its anonymous informants report,
and that if he refused to pay the fine, he would be sentenced to from one to
three years in jail for disobedience.
Olivera says he is more concerned for the health of Milagros Pérez,
67, his wifes hypertensive aunt and the owner of the house, who was fined
500 pesos in one instance, and 1,500 pesos in each of the other two, for "allowing
the transgression to occur."
