Case against independent journalist dismissed

HAVANA, September 13 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI / www.cubanet.org) - The municipal Popular Tribunal of the Isle of Youth dismissed proceedings against independent journalist Carlos Serpa Maceira, who had been accused of not paying a fine.

Serpa had been fined March 13 when he was covering a dissidents’ demonstration for the release of political prisoners in the Isle of Youth.

At the hearing September 12, Serpa said false documents were introduced in evidence against him. He was accused of evading payment of a 60-peso fine.

The court dismissed the case when Serpa produced a receipt showing he had paid the fine.

Serpa is a member of the Union of Independent Cuban Journalists and Writers and has uncovered serious economic and social problems in the Isle of Youth.
