HERRADURA, September 13 (Lázaro Raúl González, CPI /
www.cubanet.org) - Three of every four Cubans who participated in an informal
survey conducted by the Cooperative of Independent Journalists said they were
skeptical that the U. S. embargo was the cause of the present economic crisis,
as the government maintains.
According to government spokesmen and news media, the U. S. embargo is the
root cause of the chronic difficulties plaguing the Cuban economy, yet only 46
of 200 Cubans polled agreed with that premise.
When asked what they thought was the real cause of the Cuban economic
crisis, 49 percent attributed it to the inefficiency of the Socialist system, 10
percent said it was a product of the world crisis, and 18 percent declined to
answer; only 23 percent agreed with the governments position.
The survey was conducted in person and by telephone in several provinces. In
no case were dissidents included in the sample.
