CIEGO DE ÁVILA, September 9 (José Manuel Caraballo, APLA /
www.cubanet.org) - Last weeks theft of hams, eggs, beef, and canned goods
from the Sol Club Cayo Coco hotel is still under investigation by the Technical
Investigations Department of the Ministry of the Interior.
Reportedly, there was no break-in and only three persons have keys to the
cold room from where the items were stolen: the chef Lázaro Toca
Agramonte, another chef, known only as Yayo, and a Spaniard named Carlos.
A reliable source whose identity cannot be revealed said that the theft is
only one of many that have taken place at the hotel.
A hotel employee said: "In order to subtract a little piece of
left-over ham, we have to jump through hoops, but the chiefs take food wholesale
and nothing happens. Im not saying it because of this incident, but
because thefts are frequent here."
The Sol Club Cayo Coco hotel is a 270-room joint venture between the Sol
Meliá Spanish hoteliers and the Cuban government, operated exclusively
for foreign tourists and high government officials. The hotel is one of five
operated by the consortium in the keys off the coast of Ciego de Ávila
province; the others are Meliá Cayo Coco, Tryp Cayo Coco, Meliá
Cayo Guillermo, and Sol Club Cayo Guillermo.
