GÜINES, August 29 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Residents of a home for the aged in Güines, Havana
province, complain about what they say are poor living conditions in the
facility operated by the Public Health Ministry.
The residents primary complaints have to do with the conditions of the
building, which hasnt been maintained since it was built 20 years ago, and
include leaky ceilings, inoperative or condemned windows, and lack of hot water
due to defective solar collectors.
One of the residents of the Mario Muñoz Monroy home,
Jacinto Sánchez, said: "We are used to seeing the deteriorated image
of the home. Look there," he said, pointing to a broken window, "at
any moment it can fall, and it could even kill somebody."
There are also complaints about the food. "I complain about the quality
of the food. They are very poorly cooked. Besides, there is no hygiene. This is
filthy," said resident Caridad Rosales.
All residents are older people without family who depend exclusively on
services provided by the Public Health Ministry.
