MORÓN, October 11 (José Manuel Caraballo, APLA /
www.cubanet.org) - Members of the Youth Communist League have been drafted to
finish the construction of the new airport in Cayo Coco, the tourist resort just
north of the coast in Ciego de Ávila province, starting October 6.
The airport has been denounced by Cuban ecologists as detrimental to the
fragile ecosystem, but the government considers the revenue from the hotels in
the area to be of paramount importance. The Spanish hotel company Sol Meliá,
operates four hotels in the keys in a joint venture with the Cuban government.
A tourism sector source said the young Communists are drafted "voluntarily"
to work in the project.
Ecologists fear the air traffic in the area will do irreparable damage to
the local fauna. They point out the main flamingo colonies are near the new
airport.
