PLACETAS, November 21 (María Elena Alpízar, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - The South Polyclinic, in Placetas, a town in central Cuba,
has no means of coping with the frequent power outages decreed by the government
to save oil.
Several patients have said they could not be treated when the power went out
because there is neither a flashlight, a kerosene lamp, or an emergency power
generator at the facility.
Recently, personnel experienced difficulties adjusting an inhalator on an
eight-year-old boy with asthma, and caused multiple lesions in the arms of a
hypertensive young woman when they tried to find a vein, all in the dark.
The polyclinic renders primary medical care for approximately 30,000 area
residents and is open 24 hours a day.
