GÜINES, November 13 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Officials of the Basic Electric Organization in Güines
took local residents to task for exceeding the planned electrical consumption
between July and September by 2.8 percent.
Alaín Centelles, in charge of electrical loads at the power company,
said in a radio program that residents had exceeded consumption whereas the
government sector had reduced its consumption.
Yet, Centelles threatened to cut off service to certain government
enterprises that exceeded their power allocation for October. He made specific
mention of Refractarios Habana, Frigorífico Bizarrón, both in Güines;
and La Española, in Nueva Paz, and the Héctor Molina sugar mill,
in San Nicolás de Bari.
Centelles said that cutting off electricity to government entities directly
affects the economy, but that due to the crisis in power generation, the
government has no choice but to cut off service to those exceeding their
consumption quotas.
Lately blackouts have become more frequent as several generating plants have
gone off line, among them the Antonio Guiteras in Matanzas, considered by some
to be the most efficient in the country.
Most of the electricity in Cuba is generated in oil-burning plants using
domestic crude which is high in sulfur, and leads to frequent breakdowns.
