Authorities alarmed by rising drug use

The Justice minister met with school principals and other officials in Diez de Octubre municipality

HAVANA, November 4 (Claudia Márquez Linares, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - Faced with rising drug use in the Diez de Octubre municipality in Havana, the Justice minister and director of the Anti-Drugs Committee, Roberto Díaz Sotolongo, met with school principals, delegates to the Popular Power (local government) and Communist Party officials.

At the meeting, held in Lawton neighborhood, school principals were advised to redouble their vigilance lest drugs make inroads into the schools.

A Lawton resident said drug use is common in the area, and that in his reckoning there has been an increase in delinquency and that students in secondary schools are smoking marihuana in the bathrooms.
