GÜINES, July 25 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- Residents of building 9, in the development zone of Güines, a town south
of Havana, fear the structure is in imminent danger of collapsing, yet wont
abandon their homes, saying they have nowhere else to go.
The buildings water tanks, located on the roof, have been leaking
since anyone can remember, and the water has weakened the structure. Fifth-floor
apartments routinely have water running down the walls and pooling on the
floors. Residents raise their belongings above floor-level to protect them.
Some, have moved their furniture out of the building altogether.
"We have appealed many times to the headquarters of the municipal
Popular Power, but its local president, Luis Mesa, always says the same, that he
doesnt have the resources to repair the building," said one building
resident who asked not to be identified.
