Youth gangs run free in Arroyo Naranjo

HAVANA, August 28 (Víctor M. Domínguez, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - A gang of youths acts with impunity in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo while residents complain that local police accept gifts from the gang members and their relatives.

Most recently, gang members beat up 22-year-old Mayelín Cuello, who is now in serious condition in the intensive care unit of the Luis Díaz Soto military hospital.

Police later picked-up 12 gang members, fined them 30 pesos each and freed them.

The mother of Mayelín complained to the chief of police, who told her that he couldn’t prosecute those responsible because it hadn’t been a homicide.
