NUEVA GERONA, August 27 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) -
Prosecutors in Ciego de Ávila province are asking for five- and six-year
prison terms for two independent journalists who were arrested in Ciego de Ávila
March 4 as they were covering an anti-government demonstration.
The journalists, Léxter Téllez Castro and Carlos Brizuela
Yera, were arrested along with others in front of a hospital where yet another
journalist was receiving care for a beating he received at the hands of Interior
Ministry agents. The demonstration was in his support.
The journalists and the other dissidents arrested are said to be facing
charges of disrespect to the person of Fidel Castro, public disorder,
resistance, and disobedience. No trial date has been set.
