14,000 in El Cristo without water for 18 days

HAVANA, August 14 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Approximately 14,000 residents of El Cristo municipality, in Santiago de Cuba province, have been without water for the last 18 days, since the water pump broke down. Residents of Boniato, San Vicente, Prosperidad, and Dos Bocas are also affected by the breakdown.

Residents say the water they get now comes from entrepreneurs who fill 55 gallon drums at the well, transport them in a wheelbarrow and sell them for 12 pesos.

Local residents say they are becoming concerned, since local government officials do not seem able to address the problem.
