HAVANA, August 8 (Alicia Zamora Labrada, Lux Info Press) - More than 150
workers in two tile factories near Pinar del Río, in the province of the
same name, have not had required medical check-ups in the last two years despite
working under hazardous conditions, said labor activists here.
The workers are daily exposed to silica dust, and work without respirators
or protective clothing, said Pedro Infante Sierra, a labor activist in the
province. Contamination levels in the work areas are high due to mostly obsolete
technology employed in the factories, he said.
In the last few months, there have come to light the untimely deaths of at
least five ex-workers, some for apparently unknown causes, Infante charged.
The factories belong to the Construction Materials Enterprise No. 7, which
produces goods sold in the dollar-denominated market.
