MESSINA, Sicily - Powerhouse Cuba shut out the Czech Republic 14-0, and
Italy trounced Canada 14-3 in action Monday in the World University Baseball
Championship.
Italy, where baseball is far overshadowed by soccer and basketball, roared
to a start, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Canada's Cooper Devin was
sent to the bullpen after giving up five runs. Credited with the win for Italy
was John Pilato.
Cuba was leading 6-0 going into the seventh inning, when it chalked up eight
more runs. Winning pitcher was Roidel Enriquez Villareal. The Cubans notched 18
hits to their opponents' two.
Both games were stopped after seven innings because of the runaway scores.
In late night action, South Korea and China were tied 3-3 in the seventh,
and play was continuing.
The championship, running through Aug. 11, features teams from Canada,
China, the Czech Republic, Cuba, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and
the United States. |
