GÜINES, July 30 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- A Güines cannery operated by the Cuban armed forces dumps hundreds of
liters of oil daily in the Mayabeque river, whose water is used further
downstream to irrigate crops.
The factory, Conservas Mayabeque, is operated by the Basic Unit of
Self-Supply of the Cuban Armed Forces Ministry since it was turned over to them
after a three-year period of inactivity. The Ministry modernized the facility,
installing new machinery, to supply preserves to troops quartered in Havana and
to sell in the TRD Caribe dollar stores, also operated by the military as a
profitable sideline.
In spite of the modernization, oil leaks profusely around the boilers which
supply the steam for canning.
Area farmers and residents have appealed to colonel Armando García,
the factorys director, for relief, without any success so far.
Nearby resident José Ángel Mesa, says "The [pollutants]
intrusion in my yard is frequent. A thick layer of burnt oil accumulates there.
I dont know what Im going to do, because the factorys
administrators dont care what happens here."
