CAMAGÜEY, December 20 (Normando Hernández, CPIC /
www.cubanet.org) - The brand-new dispensary in the town of Vertientes, Camagüey
province, is falling apart three months after it was built.
Medical dispensary No. 11, as it is officially known, was built as a
self-contained unit, with an office and living quarters for medical personnel.
Now, when the doctor and nurse who live there use the plumbing in the morning,
the office floods.
The office bath doesn't have a door and the toilet cannot be flushed, the
sink faucet has no handle and the drain is plugged.
The living quarters are no better. In the doctor's apartment, the roof leaks
and the bedroom has no electricity. The nurse's light switches short out and her
bathroom walls leak.
Recently, at a meeting of the region's medical personnel, the municipal
director of Public Health, Pedro Julio Salcedo, stated that the meeting would
not entertain complaints about shortcomings, because the meeting would never
end.
Medical dispensary No. 11 is where 734 residents get primary medical care.
