CAMAGÜEY, December 11 (Yoel Blanco García, CPIC /
www.cubanet.org) - Cuban border guards frustrated an attempt by 14 Cubans to
leave the island from the north coast of the central province of Camagüey,
arresting 10 and taking potshots at four others who managed to escape.
According to human rights activist Lázaro Iglesias, the four escaped
unharmed. The 10 detainees were taken to political police headquarters in
Esmeralda municipality, where they were interrogated for 24 hours.
"I will continue trying to escape from the Communist regime," said
one of the detainees later, on condition that he not be identified.
Another, Dr. Eusebio Beira, who was fined 500 pesos for providing medicines
that were to be used in the escape attempt, said, "I will keep trying to
emigrate illegally, even if it is crazy, as many think, because I have no other
option, since Cuban health-care professionals are like the property of the
State, and not allowed to leave the island legally."
