HAVANA, November 29 (Juan Carlos Linares / www.cubanet.org) - The government
is planning to extend the sale of cellular telephone service to ordinary Cubans
starting next year, said a knowledgeable source here.
Government-owned and -operated Cubacel has been providing cellular service
to Interior Ministry officials and other government higher-ups "for some
time," said a company executive.
The executive speculated that the service would be offered in dollars,
saying that the company is presently deciding exactly how and for how much it
will offer the service.
The executive also made clear that the reach of the cell phones is limited
to the national territory, so that no international calls may be made from them,
preventing what they call at Cubacel headquarters "affecting the national
security."
