Would-be rafters could go to prison

HAVANA, Cuba – May 19 (Amarilis C. Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) – Several would-be rafters who were aprehended trying to leave Cuba could be condemned to from three to five years in prison, said a penal instructor at the Melena prison south of Havana.

Francisco Rolando Rivero, presently being held at Melena, said penal instructor Nildo López informed him he would be tried for attempting to leave the country ilegally.

Rivero was aprehended in April with several companions as they were trying to leave the island by their own means. He had been fined after a previous attempt failed.
