to flee Cuba in a motor boat
HAVANA, Cuba, May 20 (Roberto Santana
Rodríguez/www.cubanet.org) - Adel
García Acosta, 27, was beaten by
police when he tried to escape custody after
being detained trying to flee Cuba this
week with 13 people, according to his wife.
The would-be rafters were stopped by police
as they were being taken in a truck to the
Marianao beach, where they planned to launch
an old motor boat for their trip to the
United States. The truck was intercepted
by four patrol cars of the National Revolutionary
Police.
García Acosta told his wife he
became nervous at the police station where
they were taken and tried to escape. His
wife said he was beaten even though he did
not put up resistance after being caught.
"I'm tied hand and feet by my suffering,
he by the beating," said his wife.
"I just want justice to be served."
The detentions prompted García
Acosta's neighbors to protest .One neighbor,
who had participated in a protest in front
of the U.S. Interests Section against the
presence in Miami of Luis Posada, wanted
by Cuban authorities, said, "How am
I not going to protest this abuse if I've
participated in march against terrorism?
