Travelers stranded in Ranchuelo

RANCHUELO, Cuba, March 8 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Travelers in Ranchuelo who expected to board a bus or train to Santa Clara the morning of March 3 found themselves stranded with little recourse but their wits.

The travelers, who typically go to the provincial capital to work, keep doctor's appointments or to attend to other matters, were told at the bus and train station that all departures had been canceled.

Lourdes Oses, a Ranchuelo resident who was taking her daughter to the doctor, said some expectant travelers had walked to the outskirts of town to try to catch a ride. Some workers, she said, were paying anyone that would take them to work on time.

"Why bother to get up? Now I will have to cancel the appointment and schedule a new one for my daughter", said Oses.

Typically, cancellations of scheduled runs in public transportation are due to lack of fuel or spare parts, and to scarcity of running stock in bus and train lines.
