Surgical personnel centralized in Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, March 1 (Guillermo Fariñas, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - In an apparent attempt to centralize surgical services in the province, surgical personnel from the Celestino Hernández Rubao hospital in Santa Clara, as well as personnel from the nearby municipalities of Placetas and Remedios, have been told to report to the Arnaldo Milián Castro provincial hospital, also in Santa Clara.

The measures comes after the embarkation of up to 50% of the surgical personnel in the province to Venezuela, under an aid program that sends Cuban medical personnel to Venezuela while Venezuela sends crude to the island.

The surgical teams sent to the provincial hospital, including surgeons, nurses, and technicians, were told that any requests for transfers to facilities closer to their residences would be considered sabotage of the "Battle of Ideas," a political campaign the government has been waging since 1999.
