Drought in Cuba attracts water vendors

RANCHUELO, Cuba, March 2 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - The ongoing drought in the area has brought out people who supply water for a price in Ranchuelo, and since February 22, several can be seen plying the town's streets.

"These vendors, just by taking water to those that need it, make upwards of 30 pesos a day. That is, they make more than a university graduate," said Ranchuelo resident Lourdes Oses.

Ranchuelo is one of the few towns on the island that doesn't have an aqueduct, so it normally relies on wells for its water. The wells are running very low or dry due to the length and severity of the dry season.
