- The political prisoner Jorge Luis Garcia
Perez (Antúnez) refused a testicular
varicose vein surgery as prescribed in a
medical evaluation performed by prison doctors.
According to an information given yesterday
by his sister Berta Antúnez Pernet,
a prisoner told her that prison authorities
refused to give Antunez his medications.
"Another prisoner sent me a note telling
me to show up at the prison for my brother
was going to be operated on", she stated.
Berta Antunez immediately went to the
prison and confronted prison authorities
but was told that Antunez had refused treatment
as stated in a medical evaluation. According
to the evaluation, Antunez required a testicular
varicose surgery, procedure indicated to
relieve testicular pain and also for those
suffering from infertility.
Berta, who has not seen or spoken to her
brother since January 5, demanded the return
of her brother's medications but officials
stated that Antunez has donated the medication
to another prisoner that needed them.
Berta Antunez Pernet stated that the family
was pleased her brother refused the surgical
procedure, for the prison system has always
refused to give her brother any medical
attention. "How come they keep on denying
him medical attention for the nodule in
his lung?"
"We don't trust whatever it is they
want to do to him at this late stage",
concluded Berta.
