Ongoing repressive campaign in eastern Cuba

HOLGUÍN, January 28 (www.cubanet.org) - A repressive campaign unleashed by police in the mining community of Moa, in eastern Cuba, seems directed against the self-employed in the area.

Several pedicab operators who don't have all the required permits to ply their trade were fined between 500 and 1,500 pesos. The operators say the government refuses to give them the permits and licenses even though they try to comply with all procedures and regulations.

I was stopped myself on January 20 as I walked down the street with my 15-year-old son. Two officers searched my son's backpack and asked for my ID papers. When I asked for an explanation, one of the officers said: "We are the police and we have the right to stop and search any person, on the street or anywhere."
