Spoiled yogurt sold to sick Cuban children

HAVANA, January 27 (www.cubanet.org) - In several distribution centers in central Havana spoiled yogurt has been sold for children who cannot tolerate fresh milk, causing them severe stomach distress.

The yogurt is only intended for children under the age of 7 who present a doctor's prescription requiring it.

The children's mothers complain that since the yogurt is sold in the evening, at the rate of two liters per child every two days, they end up feeding their children sugar water because they don't have the money to buy dollars and acquire yogurt in the dollar establishments.

Even then, they say, there is a shortage of yogurt in the dollar stores themselves.

A liter of yogurt sells for 1.25 dollar, or 31 pesos.
