Mother of political prisoner in fast, also shaves her head

(HAVANA, January 20, Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - Isabel Ramos Martínez, mother of the political prisoner Arturo Suárez Ramos, who began a fast on December 8, for the freedom of all political prisoners and also demanding that medical attention be given to her son in prison, shaved her head as part of her protest.

Ramos Martínez informed correspondents of Lux Info Press from her residence in Jaimanitas, at Calle 240 #5A05 between 5ta A and 5ta B, that she will continue the fast to the ultimate consequences. Her son has shaved his head in prison as a sign of solidarity.

Correspondents that visited Ramos Martinez were alarmed by her physical deterioration, she has lost 20 pounds, feels very weak and is fasting by herself all alone in her home. Therefore they request that the international community take note of her situation and stay vigilant in the event her health deteriorates even further.

Arturo Suarez Ramos was arrested on October 3, 1987, accused of air piracy while trying to escape from the Island and sentenced to death by firing squad. Thanks to a vigorous international campaign headed by the Cuban Pro Human Rights Committee (CCPDH) his sentence was commuted to 30 years in prison.

Reported the correspondent of Lux Info Press in Havana Gilberto Figueredo Alvarez. For the Information Bridge Cuba Miami given on January 18, 2004.
