House burns to the ground as no one answers fire station phone in Havana

HAVANA, January 16 (www.cubanet.org) - A wooden house burned to the ground this week in the Cerro district of Havana when no one answered the telephone at the fire station.

The fire was caused by a short circuit while the owners were absent. The pair are serving jail sentences for common crimes.

When neighbors failed to contact the fire department, one of the rode his motorcycle there and personally requested help. Two fire trucks arrived and sprayed foam on the house, but by then it was too late to save it.

"We feared the fire would spread to other houses," one neighbor said.
