Cuban rafters feel harassed by authorities
HAVANA, January 14 (www.cubanet.org) -
Five returned rafters were arrested Friday
and held for several hours, accused of stealing
a motorcycle that later turned up without
incident.
The bail was set at 5,000 pesos for each
of the men, and they await trial, said Bárbara
Lorenzo, who tried to leave the island with
the men back in November.
"The motorcycle turned up and its
owner withdrew the complaint, but they are
still in jail and the trial is still set,
because now the police is the complainant,"
said one of the rafters, adding that they
had nothing to do with the motorcycle. He
asked that his name not be used for fear
of bringing more problems upon himself.
Bárbara Lorenzo said she has been
visited by the police sector chief and by
agents of the Department of State Security,
who have threatened to take away her three-year-old
daughter and to put her in jail if she attempts
to leave the country again.
Lorenzo and the five men, who live in Arroyo
Naranjo, on the outskirts of Havana, left
the island November 26 in a small boat,
but had to turn back after going a few miles
due to bad weather. As they were approaching
the coast, they were apprehended by Cuban
authorities.
