Two men exchange gunfire with police
in Havana
HAVANA, January 8 (www.cubanet.org) - Early
Wednesday morning residents in the neighborhood
of 23 Street between D and E Streets, in
the upscale Vedado district of Havana, woke
up to the sound of gunfire.
Eyewitnesses said later that they saw two
men with handguns being chased by police
and exchanging gunfire with them.
There were also reports that guards posted
at the government office building at 23
and E Streets joined in the fray.
As far as the bystanders could ascertain,
no one was wounded and the men were not
apprehended.
The official press has not taken notice
of the unusual incident. The acquisition
of a handgun is extremely difficult in Cuba,
and just having it can result in severe
penalties.
