Cuban volleyball player stays behind in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Wow, Monday, January 12th, 2004.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Cuban volleyball player Yosleider Cala didn't board a plane with his teammates to return to Cuba after an Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico, an official said.

Cala, 19, wasn't on the plane with the others when it left Sunday, said Carlos Beltran, president of the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation. He said the player's whereabouts were unknown.

Cala's intentions were unclear, but some other Cuban athletes have chosen to abandon their teams in recent years and remain in the United States while on tour.

Cala played in the final game Saturday as the regional volleyball tournament concluded with Cuba losing to the United States. The Cuban team left with the other 11 players, Beltran said.

Immigration officials in the U.S. Caribbean territory said they had no information, and Cuban officials did not comment on the matter.
