Four baseball players banned for life, probably because they were caught trying to flee

HAVANA, January 7 (www.cubanet.org) - Four members of the Cuban national baseball team have been banned for life, probably because they were caught attempting to flee the island.

The National Baseball Commission announced on Television Sunday the sanctions against Kendry Morales, a 20-year-old switch hitter who was batting .350, catcher Barbaro Cañizares, right-hand pitcher José Ibar and Juan Miguel Abat, whose position was not given.

Baseball fans following the careers of the players says Morales and Cañizares were caught trying to board a boat in the fishing port of Caibarien. Morales was recently escorted back to Cuba from Panama, where the team had been playing.

Righthander José Ibar was said to have been detained in Havana's Villa Marista on December 16 after being stopped earlier while trying to board a flimsy boat.
