Bus stops don't have up-to-date signs
in Cuba
HAVANA, January 5 (www.cubanet.org) -
At least 1,564 bus stops in Havana either
don't have the appropriate signs or the
signs that are there are not up to date,
says a report from the office of traffic
regulation.
The signs have been disappearing through
the years due to accidents, lack of maintenance,
and pilferage by people who take them for
the zinc in the sign or the steel in the
pole.
The traffic office estimated that to replace
the signs on just one thoroughfare, the
Calzada 10 de Octubre, would cost about
20,000 dollars and 10,000 pesos. [Cost figures
are frequently given in dollars and pesos
in Cuba, representing two different costs
that cannot be added up. The figure above,
for instance, means 20,000 dollars for goods
and services that must be obtained abroad
in hard currency, and 10,000 pesos for goods
and services that can be obtained domestically
and paid for in pesos.]
