HAVANA, June 26 (www.cubanet.org) - Cuban taxicabs that up to now were for
the exclusive use of tourists are beginning to accept payment of their fares in
pesos, thus becoming available to the Cuban population, admitted reluctantly a
driver for the Ver a Cuba (See Cuba) government agency.
The driver, who would not be identified, answered prodding for further
information by saying: "Listen, comrade, this will all be coming out
eventually in the official press. I don't know you."
The Cubanacán and Ver a Cuba agencies have already started peso
service in areas of Havana, and are extending the service to the provinces,
where the decrease in tourist traffic is even more evident than in the capital.
