Havana, CUBA. On 20 June the Cuban authorities transferred the political
prisoner Jorge Luis Garcia Perez from the Combinado del Este prison in Havana to
another prison in the town of Rodos, Cienfuegos province. This information was
passed on to the sister of Perez by relatives of another dissident serving his
sentence in the same prison, called Ariza, in Rodos.
Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, also known as Antunez, is 37 years old, and has
hardly been out of prison since 15 March 1990. On this day, the opening of the
14th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party, Antunez publicly declared in the
town of Placetas that "Communism is an utopia" and that "Cuba
requires the same changes as have occurred in Eastern Europe".
As a result of this he was accused of "hostile propaganda" and
sentenced. In 1991 Antunez declared himself a "Plantado": a prisoner
who refuses to wear prisoner's clothing and to take part in "political
education". As a result of escaping from prison and refusing to cooperate
with prison authorities, his sentence was repeatedly extended. Antunez should be
released according to his sentence in 2007.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern about his
deteriorating state of health. The Cuban dissident news agency CUBANET has
informed that Antunez has so far been held in ten different prisons throughout
Cuba. |
