FROM PRISON

Independent journalist threatened with 20-year sentence

HAVANA, June 25 (www.cubanet.org) - An agent of the political police in the Isle of Youth, off the coast of Havana province, threatened to send an independent journalist to prison for 20 years unless he quit sending news stories abroad, including to CubaNet.

Carlos Serpa, 35, says he received a late-night visit from political police agent Vladimir Rodes La O, who told him that "any news of the Isle of Youth published by CubaNet would be my responsibility, and that I would have to answer."

According to Serpa, the agent told him that independent journalists Fabio Prieto and Víctor Rolando Arroyo are in prison because they wouldn't listen to advice.

Serpa said the agent, who came accompanied by captain of the Department of State Security Gerardo Audia Frómeta, reminded him that he has an open pending file as a violator of Law 88, the gag law.

Serpa, who lives in the Isle of Youth and may be the only independent journalist left there, said he intends to continue working.
