cultural freedom fading, Armas said

AGI Online. Italy, June
26, 2003. AGI) - Florence, June, 26 - "The already narrow Cuban
cultural opportunity are even more reducing." The Cuban writer Pedro
Marques De Armas, who participated to a press conference in Florence, launched
an alarm about cultural and political repression in Cuba. "During the
nineties - Armas explained - in Cuba we started going back to our traditions in
its various expressions, music and so on." In this context, "institutions
lost their grip on Cuban people", and "that cultural development was
seen as an enemy of the revolution." That's way in Cuba we assist to a
'radicalisation'. Many years ago, revolution brought freedom, but this is not
anymore the case." As a consequence - Armas concluded - the majority of the
Cuban writers is in exile." (AGI)
