Irena Kirkland, widow of Lane Kirkland, former president of AFLCIO and
an enthusiastic supporter of Solidarity, has sent an appeal of independent Cuban
trade unionist to Lech Walesa. Mrs. Kirland's letter follows:
The Honorable Lech Walesa Al. Jerosolimskie 11/19 00-508 Warcazwa Poland
Dear Lech:
Enclosed you will find an appeal drafted by independent Cuban trade
unionists requesting international solidarity in defense of labor and human
rights in Cuba. It also calls upon the Cuban government to free the trade
unionists who have recently been imprisoned without any justification. It is
their great hope that trade union leaders around the world will endorse this
appeal and express their full solidarity with their suffering brothers and
sisters in Cuba.
There is no one in the world more appropriate than yourself to circulate
this appeal for international solidarity with the Cuban workers. You struggled
for the same rights in Poland, and the idea of solidarity in defense of workers-
dignity will forever be associated with your name. I would love it if you would
perform this service in the cause of human freedom.
Sincerely,
Irena Kirkland |
