NUEVA GERONA, June 18 (www.cubanet.org) - The government store in a small
rural community in the Isle of Youth charged consumers 50 cents instead of the
stipulated quota price of 35 cents for 230 grams (about a quarter pound) of
chicken they sold, charged a former prices inspector.
Sergio Miguel Placeres, whose job used to be inspecting that consumers be
charged the appropriate prices, noticed that when La Única store
distributed the small portions of chicken allocated under the ration book, the
400 consumers obligated to get their quota allocations there were being
systematically overcharged.
The store administrator, Alexis Melgarejo, said he had just not checked the
price.
Placeres wasn't buying it, pointing out Melgarejo has 11 years experience in
store management.
Residents say their money has not been refunded.
La Única is located in the small rural community of La Demajagua,
about 12 miles from the capital city Nueva Gerona.
