HAVANA, June 16 (www.cubanet.org) - After having hired him to work in the
Caibarién lobster processing plant, authorities refused to employ Pedro
Rafael Jorge once they learned he had links to dissident groups.
Jorge said his work contract was all but ready to be signed, and when
authorities ran it through the computer, it came out that he was affiliated to a
human rights group and had once tried to leave the island, ending his job
prospects there.
Jorge was fired three months ago from a leather processor also in Caibarién,
for his political beliefs, and has had a hard time getting a new job.
He also applied at the military construction unit for housing, where they
asked for letters and credentials of membership in political organizations. When
he said that he did not belong to any official organization, officials told him
he was a traitor and couldn't work there.
