HAVANA, June 13 (www.cubanet.org) - The director general of Cuban TV's
information services and of Cubavisión channel, Mario Robaina, was
dismissed from his post, presumably for irregularities in processing a Swiss
businessman's application for an exclusive representation agreement.
The Swiss businessman, representing a company based on an unspecified
Caribbean island, applied for the exclusive right to represent the international
broadcasts of Cubavisión in several countries in the area. As part of the
application process, the businessman had to undergo extensive screening,
including an investigation by the Department of State Security.
Apparently, Robaina signed off on the application before the end of the
investigation. When the news reached the higher echelons of Cuban TV, he was
promptly removed.
Froilán Arencibia, the previous No. 2 man, was named to replace
Robaina at Cubavisión.
Robaina was director general of Channel 6 in the 80s, and had been replaced
by Omar González. Robaina was then put in charge of Radio Cadena Habana,
and after some years in radio, had been reinstated in TV administration.
