HAVANA, June 13 (www.cubanet.org) - Around 30 food-industry workers in
Havana processing their retirement papers found the moneys discounted from their
pay do not show in the computer as having been credited to their accounts.
Predictably, the workers of the Empresa de Comercio y Gastronomía in
central Havana say they feel cheated.
Juan Luis Pérez, who works for the company as a waiter, said that for
years he had had 80 pesos a month discounted from his salary that were supposed
to go to the local Popular Savings bank, but that the money does not show in the
computer, according to William Toledo, the general secretary of an independent
labor organization.
Toledo added that company administrators told Pérez that there was an
error due to the irregularities of the computers, which exempted them from
responsibility for the loss of the savings.
Pérez appealed to the municipal secretariat of the official union,
where he was told they would consider his demands, but that the answers would
have to be sought at higher levels.
It is estimated around 30 workers are similarly affected.
