HAVANA, June 13 (www.cubanet.org) - Around 45 residents of a two-story
building in central Havana took their possessions out on the street June 11 and
demanded to be relocated, citing fears that the building could collapse after
heavy rains in recent weeks.
The building dates back to the 19th Century and had been declared
uninhabitable by the department of architecture of the municipal housing
authority a few years ago.
Eyewitness Iván Cuza characterized the scene in front of the Sitios
Street building as a "spectacle," with the street strewn with
furniture, personal belongings, refrigerators, TV sets, and even stoves.
"The children did not go to school, nor the workers to work that day.
The women were cooking in neighbors' homes. Police tried to get them all to go
back, but they resolutely refused, demanding safer housing," said Cuza.
He added that authorities hurriedly cleaned up a large warehouse nearby and
placed the building's tenants in it.
