(AGI) - Rome, Italy, June 12 - With a letter sent to defence minister
Antonio Martino, SDI senator Giovanni Crema - president of the
inter-parliamentary union - resigned from the presidency of the bilateral
section "Italy-Cuba frienship". "I acknowledged that, following
the last tragic events, there is no possibility to communicate frankly".
"My availability, as a democratic socialist, to take part in
initiatives to help the Cuban people ferry across to a democracy respecting
human rights is still intact, but it cannot be fruitful without a credible
interlocutor. Since my mandate began, my only dialogue with the embassy focused
on Cuba's request of an institu tional intervention which 5 Cuban Heroes are
victim of, "prisoners of the Empire ", that is, tried and condemned in
the USA. I have always fought for human rights, hence, at a personal level, I
will investigate on this. But I cannot fuel the fire of institutional talks
which risk becoming grotesque. I thank you for the faith you had in me, but I am
forced to hand in my resignations". (AGI)
