HAVANA, June 11 (www.cubanet.org) - Relatives of prisoner of conscience
Miguel Galbán Gutiérrez charge that he is suffering from
dehydration after suffering from chronic bouts of diarrhea for two months.
Galbán, 38, is serving a 26-year sentence at the maximum security
prison at Agüica, Matanzas province. Galbán, a dissident and
independent journalist, was convicted of "attempting against the Nation's
independence."
Relatives say Galbán is not receiving adequate treatment, at least in
part because of bureaucratic contradictions. For instance, they say Galbán
told them he was given a container to collect a feces sample but that prison
authorities never picked it up.
Galbán also told relatives that the doctor told him she could not
treat him without seeing his medical history. Relatives say his medical history
was confiscated along with other papers when his home was searched at the time
of his arrest March 18.
Galbán has lost about 17 pounds since his arrest, say relatives. He
has been handicapped since an accident in 1998.
