HAVANA, June 9 (www.cubanet.org) - Two independent journalists in the
central Cuban city of Morón were summoned by an officer of the Department
of State Security (DSE) and told to cease practicing journalism by "order
of the Comandante."
The journalists, José Manuel Caraballo and Nilo Gutiérrez,
said the officer, who said his name is Amaury, was cordial enough when he told
them they must stop sending their informative work abroad, but seemed serious
when he implied the orders came straight from Fidel Castro himself.
According to Caraballo, Amaury told him he was very close to doing 20 years
in prison if he didn't stop.
Caraballo also said Amaury complained that his attitute was irreverent,
because he had promised to suspend his activities and hadn't done it. Caraballo
says he never made any such promises.
