90 percent of the buses on the Isle of Youth are out of service

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba (www.cubanet.org) - Public transportation on the Isle of Youth is operating with only 10 percent of its buses because of a shortage of spare parts.

The buses in question are used Fiats from Italy and Giron VI model assembled in Cuba over 30 years ago.

The buses need starters, batteries, transmissions and mufflers, among other parts.

Transportation minister Álvaro Pérez Morales said recently that there's no immediate solution to the transportation problem – both maritime and land – in the region.
