WASHINGTON - The United States is deeply concerned about the Cuban
government's treatment of a prisoner, Oscar Espinosa Chepe reportedly is
suffering from liver disease and other ailments, the State Department said
Monday.
According to his wife and other family members, Chepe may die if he is not
transferred from a prison hospital to a better facility in Havana, department
spokesman Philip Reeker said.
Chepe, 62, is one of 75 Cuban activists detained as part of a crackdown on
democracy activists in March.
"He was arrested and sentenced to prison for 20 years on trumped-up
treason charges," Reeker said. "His only real crime was to call for
peaceful change in Cuba."
Reeker said the United States also is concerned about the well being of four
other Cuban anti-government activists who also are reported to have health
problems in confinement: Raul Rivero, Marta Beatriz Roque, Jorge Olivera and
Roberto de Miranda.
